Communication 2- Ongoing Communication

Why is ongoing communication in the online classroom important?

In the online classroom ongoing communication is important to keep all current on what is going on.  The welcome email  and welcome synchronous session are a great start, however it is just that, a start.  The communication must be ongoing to ensure that the student does the best in the class.  Ongoing communication allows students and their parents to know what is being studied, monitor progress, and it keeps the door to communication open.  In my newsletter, there is a place for my contact information which may cause a parent or student to email with a question or concern.  Online instructors must be consistent in offering effective modes of communication.  A weekly newsletter and updates are two ways this can be done.

How does the newsletter differ from mandatory communications?
The newsletter differs from mandatory communication because it can include more than what is mandated.  Performance and grade updates must be communicated and can be mentioned in a newsletter, but the newsletter can also have reminders of important dates.  If there is going to be a break in the school year, it can be in the newsletter.  Words of encouragement or an insightful comment also have a place in the newsletter.  When more is mentioned in the newsletter it can encourage a collaborative approach to learning, the course, and the online learning experience as a whole for the student and parent.

The second artifact  has a link below to the newsletter I created using smore.
