Create 3- Fair Use and TEACH Act

How might an online or blended classroom teacher use Fair Use when gathering resources for educational purposes? What observations have you made about Fair Use and the TEACH Act and how has it changed your approach to finding reliable content for your students?

An online teacher my use Fair Use by using materials which are copyrighted in their teaching.  They may use a portion of the copyrighted text to teach the class.  This can save the instructor time when trying to find resources to use.  the teacher must keep in mind the four factors when it comes to fair Use. They are listed below.  

•  The purpose and character of the use
•  The nature of the work
•  The amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the work as a whole
•   The effect of the use on the market or potential market for the original work

While Fair Use applies to all, the TEACH ACT is just for teachers. It allows teachers to have copyright exemptions when certain criteria  is met. The criteria is listed below. 

• The institution must be an accredited, nonprofit educational institution.
• The use must be part of mediated instructional activities.
• The use must be limited to a specific number of students enrolled in a specific class.
• The use must either be for 'live' or asynchronous class sessions.
• The use must not include the transmission of textbook materials, materials “typically purchased or acquired by students,” or works developed specifically for online uses.

The fair Use and TEACH Act have definitely changed my approach to finding reliable content.  I will

keep in mind the four factors when I am researching content material.  I will be mindful of copyright laws.  I will also use the extended google search which was shown in one of the videos when I am attempting to find content. 

Create 3- Open Educational Resources

Spend time perusing the vast amount of open educational resources and examining the different usage rights regarding creative commons items.

In your blog post, create a definition of open educational resources.

What are the various Creative Commons licenses one may encounter when searching for these resources?

Open Educational Resources (OER) are resources used for education which are free and openly licensed educational materials.  These resources can be used for instructional purposes such as teaching, learning, and research.  They can be used as soon as they are found in the classroom.  Creative commons is a licensing that is placed on a resource which allows the world use the resource. The various types of Creative Commons licenses are listed below.

Attribution. All CC licenses require that others who use your work must give you credit the way you request, but not in a way that suggests you endorse them or their use. If they want to use your work without giving you credit or for endorsement purposes, they must get your permission first.

NonCommercial. You let others copy, distribute, display, perform, and (unless you have chosen No Derivative Works) modify your work, but not for commercial purposes unless they get your permission first.

ShareAlike. You let others copy, distribute, display, perform, and modify your work, as long as they distribute any modified work on the same terms. If they want to distribute your modified work under other terms, they must get your permission first.

NoDerivatives. You let others copy, distribute, display and perform only original copies of your work. If they want to modify your work, they must get your permission first.

Create 2- Web Tools for Differentiation of Student Assessment

Using your lesson topic, create an assessment that allows students to produce a summative assessment product using web tools. Isolate one web tool that aligns with differentiation and student assessment. Post the tool to your blog. Create detailed instructions explaining to students the assessment requirements. Then, create a sample product that uses the web tool to guide your students.

Bubbl.us - use this tool to create graphic organizers and timelines


I could have the students to create a graphic with Bubbl.us which shows the chain of infection. This tool allows the student to create a product and use colors and shapes of their choice to show the links of the chain of infection.  

Instructions: Use Bubbl.us to create a graphic which shows the links in the chain of infection.  Place the links in the correct order. Use at least 3 different colors.  Provide a screenshot of the completed assignment.

Create 2- Web Tools for Differentiation of Teacher Instruction

What tool did you choose?  How do you plan to use the tool effectively with students? How does the tool differentiate the lesson? Explain.

The learning tool I used was Kahoot. I made up a Kahoot  with questions based on the content of infection control.   I plan to use this tool to recap what was discussed  in a previous synchronous session.  This is a fun way to start the class and students are engaged instead of me just saying what we covered last time we met.  If I am not able to show it to online students I can have them to take a few minutes and complete the Kahoot and we can discuss the results before we start content.  

Create 2- Explore Web Tools

What is the intended use for each tool? How might you use each tool in online teaching? How might a student use the tool? Is there a cost associated with the tool?

The five instructional web tools that offer a variety of opportunities for learners are linked below with intended use, student use, and cost associated with the tool.

1. Quizlet:  Quizlet provides study tools for students, teachers, and all who want to use this tool.  As an online instructor I would quizlet to have students define key terms and make flashcards. Students can use quizlet as a study add. This is a free tool.

2. Prezi:  Prezi is a tool to present presentations which creates separate walls which organize thoughts on different topics.  I could use this to have an engaging presentation and then have  an online discussion. Students can also use prezi for their presentations.  This is a free tool. 

3. Kahoot : Kahoot is a tool which allows students to have an interactive and fun learning experience using their mobile devices.  The student can use find kahoots and create them to gain addition information.  I can use kahoot in online learning for  content review during a synchronous session.  This is a free tool. 

4. Powtoon: Powtoon is used to create animated video presentations. I can use this to tool to introduce new points in a fun way.  The student can use this tool to present as well.  This is a free tool. 

5. Sway :  Sway is an tool which can be used to create, share interactive reports, presentations, and personal stories.  I could use this to present or to share a lesson.  Students can use this tool to present or share an interactive report.  This is a free tool.

6. Healthcenter21  has interactive lessons and worksheets which allow      students to explore many areas in healthcare. Layout and design are appealing. 

7. Khan Academy  offer a variety of online tutorials and practice with many different subjects. layout and design are appealing. 

8. Paxson/Patterson very attractive site. Prepares students for careers in healthcare.  

9. Interactive science  interactive learning games for all subjects. Not very attractive, the site has a lot of distractions. 

10. Learning Science free leaning community for science.  This site is not appealing at all.  Very dark.

Create-1 Content Map

Answer: What should be included in the Content Map? What aspects of online learning and technology are essential to integrate in the process?

The content map should include a general outline procedures, process, and approach of a project.  It can be used by the online instructor to show the outline of a unit and plans.  As the lesson states, content mapping can also serve as an effective tool for collaborating during the planning phase of a project.
