Communicate 3- Digital Feedback

Using the examples above as a point of reference, create three digital resources that could be utilized when evaluating student work and discuss in your blog how these resources would enhance the level of specific feedback offered to students. These should be original creations.

Artifact number 1 is a free clip art image in that I could post in the feedback area  for a student who did a good  job. Seeing this could make the student feel happy and proud. It reminds me placing a sticker on student work.  Even in high school, they like them.

Artifact number 2 is a screenshot with commentary overlay using screen recorder. This type of digital feedback lets the student here you and helps make a connection with student.

Artifact number 3 is a link an outside resource.

I would give the student a link to an outside resource on passive immunity. This shows that the instructor is here to help and assist the student in learning.

Communicate 2- Differentiation

Create: Create an example of differentiated communication practices to post for students or parents and share on your blog.

Differentiated communication practices can be created using presentation tools, images audio and video tools, instructional tools and social and collaborative tools .  I created a remind class for Introduction to healthcare Science.

Communicate 2- Synchronous Sessions

How does integrating synchronous learning sessions within the online environment assist in developing a learning community for students? Discuss this question at length in your blog.

Integrating synchronous learning sessions within an online environment can assist in developing a learning community for students by offering the needed live interaction.  It can help the instructor get to know the students and the students to get to know the instructor. From the synchronous learning session, the instructor can see which students like to answer questions and which are quiet.  The instructor is able to hear how well the student articulates ideas and use this information to instruct.  The session can give the instructor immediate feedback on how well a student understands a concept being taught.  Many of the platforms used for the synchronous session have a variety of tools which can engage students such as polls, break out rooms and opportunities  to have student create visuals using a whiteboard.  A instructor could use polling to allow students to have a choice in certain plans.  This  can make the student feel heard and appreciated.  the chat function is useful during the session because some students may not be very vocal at first, but may enjoy using the chat feature to make points as well.  One feature which I enjoyed when I was in an online synchronous session as a student, was the ability to use symbols to agree or disagree. As brought out in the lesson, these sessions give the instructors  platform to facilitate a discussion, present a lecture, have small groups collaborate and even conference in private, which all help the online class feel connected. 

Artifact: Create an outline or lesson plan of a 30 minute synchronous session which you would facilitate.  What activities would you include?  What transitions are needed? How might you use the session as a formative assessment? How would your session a build learning community among your students?

Below is an outline for a 30 minute synchronous session which I would facilitate as a healthcare instructor. The activities and transitions are listed within.  I could record the session to use it as a formative assessment.  This session has a group activity and an interactive lecture with would help with building a sense of a learning community for my students.  

Lesson Outline

Welcome  (1 minute or less ) -

State and show objectives and transition  (3 minutes) Relate what we did last time and what we will do today. 

A transition would be needed here, I learned to ask one person to repeat back to me what we will do. Then I will move forward.

Set induction ( 1 minute)  - video from Teacher Tube relating to the content which we will discuss for example infection control , then the video can be someone washing their hands properly.

Interactive lecture with slide presentation  ( 7 minutes) - I make it interactive by asking questions and having students volunteer read some of the points. 

Breakout session  and transition ( 16  minutes) -group students  and assign roles such as who will time, who will draw.  Have them create a poster about infection control which will be saved and turned into the dropbox or it could be presented next week.  I would need a transition here to tell them who they will work with ( I'll decide that in advance) and the assignment.  I'll have someone repeat it back and answer any questions.  While they are in the rooms,  I'll visit and listen in and offer suggestions if needed. 

Closing  ( 2 minutes ) ask  a couple of  review questions based on the learning objective

and tell them what we will do next time we meet.   

  

Communicate 2-Discussions

What role or purpose do discussion forums serve in the online classroom and are they effective? 

The purpose of  discussion forums in an online learning classroom are to encourage students to post comments which show higher order of thinking and engage them.  When this is done effectively, the online classroom has a sense of community and is motivating for the student.  The discussions forums are effective and the instructor can use them to determine how well the students are understanding the content. 

How do discussion forums function as a teaching tool? 

The discussion forum functions as a teaching tool when instructors follow the Socratic Method when it comes to the questions placed in the discussion.  This method helps motivate the students to think critically and draw out their ideas.  


How could they be used effectively and ineffectively?

Discussions can be used effectively by following the best practices.  The instructor should also have outlined instructions on how and when the student should post.  If this is not done then the outcome of the discussion may be ineffective.  For example, if a student doesn't know that he or she is required to post in complete sentences and site references then they may not do that.  They would also need to know how soon their post should be submitted.  

What are some best practices for facilitating forums online?

Some of the best practices for facilitating forums online are outlined in the lesson for facilitating forums online are listed below.  

• Respond to the first thread of all student responses and ensure that the post addresses the essential elements
• Highlight selections from the prompt, reading, or thematic focus of the student’s response in the initial feedback
• Integrate audio commentary in the response
• Link to external resources, readings, or websites for further study
• Rely on the Socratic Method in all Discussion Forums

Communicate 2- News Items

As an online instructor, how do you plan to incorporate news items and announcements? 

As an online instructor, I plan to incorporate news items and announcements in the announcement section of the LMS and by creating news items.  The news items will be student-centered and appealing.  I explored many different websites such as Animoto, Jing, Teacher tube, and Voki which will be useful in getting news  and announcements to students.  

What resources would you reference to format news items?

I enjoyed exploring Voki as a resource for news.  It is very fun to make an avatar.  It is not free, so I was not able to publish my news item, however I did make a news item there.  I do plan to use teacher tube and link the videos for student use.  As the lesson stated, having audio is useful when communicating with students because it helps create the community and authenticity of the classroom and I would like to do this for my students.
